The two most used web-based applications in our internal enterprise are the following:
1) Oracle Applications
2) Sharepoint
We have found significant improvement in both. For Oracle, it significantly improves the session startup time because the Oracle java client loads every time you use one of the Java applications (i.e. Order Management, Finance, Manufacturing, etc...). To ensure that the user has the latest Java client, it downloads every time you login. The download use to take almost a minute from our east coast office (downloading from the west coast) and significantly more in our EMEA offices. With WDS, it is up in seconds and has over 95% reduction.
It also accelerates the application well because much of the traffic once you login are typically generated by two key operations (lookup tables and reports). The "lookup tables" are the tables you see when you click a field that has a validated list of options to choose from. Once those lists are cached, everyone benefits. The reports generated by first issuing a request to the server which then processes the report then stores it (typically in HTML format) on the server then displays it to the user via a web interface. Well, most reports that are run are usually just an update of a previously run report. therefore, most of the data has typically already been downloaded and cached.
We have found that Oracle is significantly improved even after the initial login. Here are numbers to prove it:
Total Data Reduction % Over Last Week - 88%
Peak Data Reduction % Over Last Week - 98%
Peak Data Reduction Occurred At 2007/03/26 15:30:00
