Autodesk Revit 9.1

We are using Revit 2008 (Which is a big speed improvement over 9.1 for save times) over a T1 connection with the SH in place. After we made this change mentioned above our times to open and save a revit file improved by 40%.

Autodesk Revit 9.1

Mark,

It's great to hear that the advanced CIFS acceleration that we released in RiOS 3.0 helped improve your Revit performance. Let me explain what overlapping opens is and when it should and should not be used.

The new CIFS optimization released in RiOS 3.0 provides layer-7 acceleration for application environments that either break an oplock (opportunistic lock) or simply do not request an oplock in the first place. While it is rare that applications exhibit this behavior, some applications and certain operation contexts within the appplication will open a file multiple times within the application itself. When this happens, the oplock that maintains data consistency becomes broken for some timeframe and this defeats Riverbed's layer-7 acceleration. Data reduction and TCP-level optimizations continue to provide optimization. Specific applications known to exhibit this behavior include Solidworks and AutoDesk Revit, as demonstrated by your experience. Please note that not all operations within these applications exhibit this behavior so overlapping opens is not always needed.

The overlapping opens optimization that provides layer-7 acceleration in the face of these environments can be enabled/disabled by file type. It is not recommended for the general case.

Autodesk Revit 9.1

We have been testing Autodesk Revit 9.1 between our Cambridge and Las Vegas office (point to point T1 no firewall inbetween) with Riverbed Steelehead's. The majority of the work with Revit was done in Cambridge but we did have one person in Las Vegas working with the application at the same time as the people working in Cambridge. At 1st the LV user was having a really hard time with freezing\not responding and simple tasks taking too long to save. He was not productive. I talked with the Riverbed tech and he told me it probably had something to do with Revit attempting to open files with an Exclusive or Batch oplock. He had me do the following...

Log onto the Riverbed in Las Vegas (not in Cambridge)
Click on the setup tab
Click on Protocol Cifs under the optimization service
Type rvt under optimize only the following extensions

This setting seemed to help the person in Las Vegas. The Riverbed tech told me that the change allows the Riverbed in Las Vegas to hold the lock. He told me if there was any problems we would see them in the Cambridge office. So far we haven't had any problems in Cambridge (and believe me I'd be hearing about them).

I wanted to share this in case someone is attempting the same thing (sharing Revit files between offices at the same time). If you have any tips or tricks that worked for you with Riverbed and Revit it would be great to hear about them.

Thanks,

Mark
