Many have asked if RDP and ICA traffic can be optimized. The answer is YES but how well it is optimized depends entirely in your usage.
With the way we use Citrix for our private cloud computing environment, we get over 40% optimization of ICA in our remote branch locations. Ignore what you hear about ICA and RDP not being optimizable. The primary reason that the so-called experts say that is that the ICA protocol is already very efficient. That's true but while they focus on efficiency of the protocol they forget one other factor - redundancy. When you have multiple users running Citrix desktops on a remote terminal server, they often share similar traffic patterns. Hence, the local cache generated by one user can be leveraged by another. That's why we see >40% reduction.
