More speed, scale, and security with RiOS 4.1

Thanks Mark. Also, under application acceleration, I understand that RiOS 4.1 improves disaster recovery environments? What does this entail?

As far as we know, neither Cisco nor Juniper has anything like this capability. So we've added to the set of application-specific optimizations that are available from Riverbed but not from those folks.

More speed, scale, and security with RiOS 4.1

Mark, the Oracle 11i E-Business suite of applications presents a pretty big footprint in the world of enterprise application deployments. Is this unique to Riverbed or stated another way, does Cisco and Juniper support this?

More speed, scale, and security with RiOS 4.1

It turns out that JInitiator traffic has a kind of scrambling or obfuscation applied. It's not really encryption, but it was probably intended to implement some kind of information hiding. As you know, part of the data streamlining in Steelheads looks for repeated patterns in traffic, and so this quasi-encryption foiled older versions of RiOS by making identical transfers look different. RiOS 4.1 undoes the scrambling so as to expose the underlying data for optimization. After transferring the information in an optimized form and undoing the optimization, RiOS 4.1 then re-applies the scrambling so that the client and server are unaffected by the optimization.

More speed, scale, and security with RiOS 4.1

We added application acceleration for JInitiator "native" traffic. JInitiator is an Oracle-specific Java virtual machine (JVM) whose typical use is in Oracle 11i E-Business Suite applications.

Now for the discussion covering RiOS 4.1!

Riverbed recently released a software update to its Steelhead appliances. The RiOS 4.1 software update provides features that address application acceleration, scalability, and security.

I would like to welcome Dr. Mark Day, Riverbed s Chief Scientist, to help shed some light onto what is included with this new release.

Welcome Mark.

Mark, let s start with application acceleration. What features in RiOS 4.1 cover application acceleration?
